The Surfrider Foundation

What makes Surfrider Foundation unique is its membership made up of surfers, swimmers, divers, bodyboarders, kayakers and beach enthusiasts from all walks of life. Surfrider Foundation members have proven to be powerful spokespeople and caretakers of the ocean environment which they treasure.

Just a Few of Surfrider's Many Accomplishments:

  •  Winning the second largest Clean Water Act suit in American history in 1991, brought against two pulp mills in Humboldt County that were charged with over 40,000 violations of the law.
  • Successfully blocking a marina which would have destroyed historic natural wetlands as well as miles of sandy coast at Bolsa Chica, CA.
  • Preventing an Imperial Beach, CA breakwater and a Seal Beach, CA breakwater which would have degraded water quality, eliminated surf and destroyed miles of pristine coastline.
  • Gaining approval of the federal BEACH Act in 2000 to require a uniform national water quality monitoring, reporting and beach posting program.
  • Getting the Orange County Sanitation District in California to agree to drop their Clean Water Action Section 301(h) waiver and stop the ocean discharge of 240 million gallons per day of partially treated sewage.
  • Winning a lawsuit against Chevron Oil Company in El Segundo, California that represents the first time a government agency, department or office at any government level, has recognized the significance of a breaking wave as a natural resource deserving of protection.
  • Securing passage of legislation to create "Reserva Marina Tres Palmas de Rincón" in Puerto Rico. The law will establish a marine reserve in the Tres Palmas area of Rincón and devote $100,000 for the development of a management plan for the marine reserve.

Working with the city of Laguna Beach, CA to establish and implement a 10 point program to reduce non-point source water pollution (runoff).

Remember - for every product purchased during the month of February 2006, 10% of the purchase price goes to The Surfrider Foundation.

Alpha Project

Alpha Project for the homeless was founded in 1986 originally offering work opportunities to homeless men.  Since that time it has grown and operates dozens of programs across 3 southern California counties.  They are a lean organization that depends upon donations from a variety of sources to keep their programs going.  To find out more about this organization, click on the URL above.  They have achieved many, many accomplishments over the past several years. Below is a brief put poignant sound bite about this empowering organization.

Mama's Kitchen

Mama's Kitchen was founded in 1990 when volunteers from the AIDS Assistance Fund discovered that people with AIDS were dying from the complications of malnutrition long before their immune systems were overcome by AIDS-related infections. They realized that a home meal delivery service was needed for low-income people who were too ill, isolated or emotionally devastated to help themselves. Thus, Mama’s Kitchen began delivering nourishing meals to the homes of impoverished residents of San Diego County who were affected by AIDS and HIV.

Currently, Mama’s Kitchen prepares and delivers three meals a day, every day of the year, to the men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in San Diego County. Additionally, we recently expanded our services to include a food pantry, called “Mama’s Pantry”, which is ideal for our clients that are not homebound.

Rude Ranch Animal Rescue Center

Location:

Rude Ranch Animal Rescue

3200 Ivy Way
Harwood, MD 20776

This recommendation came to us from Amy, one of our readers in West River, Maryland.  She told us of the amazing service this organization provides to cats of all kinds.  Rude Ranch is a no kill shelter and works very hard to find good homes for all their furry friends. Please check out their Web site and donate to this very worthy nonprofit.

"The Rude Ranch Animal Rescue Center is located outside of Annapolis, Maryland, USA. The mission of Rude Ranch is to find loving, permanent homes for any adoptable animal placed under our care; to provide a safe haven and rehabilitation to feral and neglected cats rescued from abusive situations; and to put an end to needless euthanasia because of pet overpopulation. We will never euthanize a healthy animal. As animal rescuers, we want to promote and encourage everyone to spay or neuter their pets. For more information on low cost spay/neuter programs, call 1-800-321-PETS in the USA."   Rude Ranch Web site

Mary's House

Location:

2374 Avenida del Diablo

Escondido, Ca 92029

Program Director: Cynthia Kangas

Phone : (760) 746-1944

"Mary's House is a transitional living program for young women who have aged out of the county foster care program. These young women attend school and /or work while in the program. This program is a much needed bridge for these young women between foster care and independent living, between adolescence and young adulthood. The vast majority of the girls at Mary's House have experienced wounds to their self-esteem and are also learning to love themselves and become confident and effective women.  Funding for this program is scarce and the program is always appreciative of support from the community."  (Beth Goodman of BG LifeCoaching for Women )

The Furnari Fund

The Furnari Fund is an organization committed to help breast cancer survivors with their prostheses needs. Charlene Furnari, a breast cancer survivor herself, created the Furnari Fund with David Mowbray (Vice President with Vmeals) and Donna Walcott in October 28, 2004.

Charlene realized that there was a need for this type of  organization only a few short months after her surgery. Charlene overheard the owner of a store that sold  prostheses, telling a customer via phone, that her insurance company would not pay for $265 prostheses. Charlene, having had double mastectomy herself, told the owner to call the woman back and that she (Charlene) would pay for it.  She realized that even women with some insurance women would have to come up with additional dollars to pay for the prostheses. She wanted to do something to help these women.

"The cost for these prostheses can add up to a considerable expense. The typical patient needs to acquire a brassiere at an average cost of $50.00 each along with the prostheses itself, which has an average cost of $275.00 per form. Thus, the total outlay after a breast mastectomy can be as high as $425.00 and $700.00 for a double mastectomy for bras and breast forms that will last about two years before replacements are needed. For an active woman the cost is increased by the need for an additional breast form for athletic purposes."  The Furnari Fund Web site

The Furnari Fund accepts contributions from individuals, companies, and other organizations. The Furnari Fund is a component fund of the Northern Virginia Community Foundation which is a 501 (c) 3 organization meaning that all contributions are fully tax deductible to the extent provided by law. The Furnari Fund is run entirely by volunteers so virtually every penny of your contribution go to those who need it. Approximately 98% of all funds received are used to meet the needs of breast cancer survivors.  For additional info, click on the URL provided above.

Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund

The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund was brought to Practical WooWoo™’s attention by LtCol Kevin Gordon (retired) who is working with other retired Marines within his current business organization to raise awareness and help create a donation stream for IMSFF.

On May 18, 2004, a small group of concerned Marine Corps spouses founded the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund to provide financial grants and other assistance to the Marines, sailors, and families of those injured serving our nation. In their first eight months, the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund provided financial assistance to over 540 families with more than $800,000. IMSFF Web site

We, here at Practical WooWoo™, feel so strongly about the great work that this organization is doing that we wanted show our support and spread the word.

The IMSFF relies on your generosity for support. Your donations are used to help provide the much needed financial assistance for the injured Marines, Sailors and their families. When a Marine or Sailor is injured, the entire family shares the burden. Lost wages, continued hospitalizations, rehabilitation, separation from family, travel & lodging, and helping the injured Marine or Sailor recover while trying to meet financial and other obligations at home add to that burden.

The IMSFF’s mission is to help these Marines, Sailors and families meet their financial needs during difficult times. The evaluation process is thorough and assistance is typically delivered within 72 hours.

THIS ORGANIZATION NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT! DONATING IS THE VERY LEAST WE CAN DO!

Please help carry some of the burden for our very brave and dedicated injured Marines and Sailors; they need our help now!

Remember – for every product that you purchase during the month of April & May 2005, 10% of the purchase price is donated to IMSFF. Even if you choose not purchase a product, click on the yellow link above and donate.
